Health Facilities Reconstruction and Health Service Strengthening in Makwanpur District Nepal

The project ‘Health Facilities Reconstruction and Health Service Strengthening in Makwanpur District Nepal’ aims to strengthen health service delivery and promote community health of all seven VDCs. The specific objectives of the project are:

  1. To construct three prefabricated health facilities following the standard guidelines of MoH
  2. To construct gender friendly community toilets in schools
  3. To improve community hygiene and sanitation practices, and mental health
  4. To enhance capacity of health workers in mental health, WASH programs and preparedness in disaster risk reduction

Project Coverage: 7 VDCs – Tistung, Nibuwatar, Makwanpurgadhi, Phakhel, Basamadi, Khairang and Dhiyal

Total population coverage: 2, 94, 667

Target group and beneficiaries: Socio-economically vulnerable people, women, children, elderly, marginalized

Donor: Americares Foundation

The first phase of the project started from February 1, 2016 in which BNMT Nepal constructed prefabricated Type-I Health Post buildings in four of the intervention VDCs -Tistung, Nibuwatar, Phakhel and Makwanpurgadi along with the supply of essential medical equipment as per government guidelines. All of the Health Posts were built in close coordination with MoH and have been handed to the Government of Nepal.

Similarly, the second phase of the project started from August 2016. BNMT has initiated the construction process of prefabricated Type-I Health Post buildings in three remaining VDC’s - Basamadi, Dhiyal and Khairang and plans to supply basic medical equipment as well.

Different public health interventions: Community WASH intervention, MHPSS program and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) are implementing in close coordination with government line agencies, other concerned stakeholders and active participation of the communities.

Expected Outcomes of the project:
The expected outcomes of the proposed project are:

  1. Constructed three additional prefabricated health posts :Basamadi Health Post, Dhiyal Health Post and Khairang Health Post
  2. Restoration of primary health care services in respective health posts
  3. Enhanced knowledge and skills of health workers to manage and decrease the incidence of infectious diseases including diarrhoea
  4. Enhanced  knowledge and skills of health service providers on MHPSS
  5. Improved  knowledge and attitude  of community people on MHPSS
  6. Developed DRR response operational plan and enhanced skills of health workers on health sector response on disaster management
  7. Increased utilization of primary health care services in the 7 VDCs of Makwanpur
  8. Improved menstrual hygiene among girls students in schools by increased  skill and use of sanitary pads, sanitary toilets
